Breast Cancer Awareness

Detection & Ways to Reduce Risk: According to the CDC, regular mammograms are the most effective way to detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is advanced enough to feel or cause symptoms. Having a discussion with your healthcare provider about scheduling a mammogram will open the conversation around the best options for you. In addition, practicing the following health habits will help lower your breast cancer risk:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Exercise regularly.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol, or limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

  • If you are taking hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills, ask your healthcare provider about the risks.

  • Breastfeed your children, if possible.

  • If you have a family history of breast cancer or inherited changes in your BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, talk with your healthcare provider about other ways to lower your risk.

Nutrition can also play a role given that plant foods are rich sources of fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals which have been shown to decrease the risk of cancer and protect the body from other chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Choose whole grains and legumes as well as a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables daily.
